Meta to close Workplace

Meta has confirmed its intention to discontinue Workplace, its enterprise communications platform.

Meta has confirmed its intention to discontinue Workplace, its enterprise communications platform, by August 31, 2025. The decision was announced by Meta spokesperson Ashley Zandy. Originally launched as Facebook @ Work in 2016 after two years of internal use, the platform was designed as an alternative to Slack and Microsoft Teams. Despite the public shutdown, Zandy assured that there would be no changes regarding its internal use at Meta.

In 2026, all data on the Workplace platform will be deleted

From September, Meta will be offering a 50% discount on the service. The company has also offered to support customers in the transition to Workvivo, a platform owned by Zoom . From September 1, 2025, Workplace will be read-only and export-only until June 1, 2026. After this date, access to the platform will cease and all data will be deleted.

Why is Meta abandoning Workplace?

The decision to close Workplace comes after a significant slowdown in its development. This is largely due to the return of employees to physical offices following the Covid-19 pandemic and the departure of several key collaborators. The increasingly competitive market for remote working tools, with powerful competitors such as Microsoft Teams, Google Workplace and new entrants like Zoom Workplace, also contributed to Meta's decision to end Workplace after a decade of development.
