X: what's new for 2024

X is a self-proclaimed video platform. Between new features and Elon Musk's wishes, we decipher the upcoming developments on the former Twitter.

In the "telenovela" category for 2023, Elon Musk is undoubtedly the year's big winner. In 2024, the billionaire and his social network, X(formerly Twitter), will be the talk of the town.

And to kick off 2024, X has declared itself a video platform. A surprising announcement when you consider that the social network has no feed dedicated to video.

X: on the road to becoming a video platform?

X's roadmap for 2024 details the steps Elon Musk intends to take to make X an "everything app", as he has always wanted it to be. Although X announced the profitability of its platform at the end of 2023, given the decline in revenues generated by X, it's hard to imagine that the evolution of the social network into an "all-in-one" platform is really achievable at the moment.

X: what results in 2023?

As usual, X is no partner of half-measures when it comes to sharing the results of the network's first statistics. According to X, users would have watched "130 years of 30-minute videos" by December 2023. Also among the major evolutions are Communities, specialized groups on specific themes. Since the option was launched, 350,000 communities have been created, with an average of 650,000 messages sent every day. Finally, X reports that it has paid 80,000 creators through its advertising revenue program.

And speaking of advertising, X reported a 22% increase in advertising commitments. A surprising result, considering the 50% loss of advertising revenue due to Elon Musk's questionable stance and the many changes that have taken place on the former Twitter. It's hard to take the platform's word for it, especially when you consider that Musk and his CEO, Linda Yaccarino, have never hesitated to lie about X's results in the first quarter of its launch.

X: a payment solution :

From the outset, Elon Musk has wanted to develop payment and money transfer facilitation solutions in X. It's not a new idea, since Musk first developed it when he was working for Paypal.

In this sense, X claims that the options will go online during 2024. The platform did not mention a specific date or period, and for good reason: obtaining the licenses enabling the use of financial options is not straightforward. So far, X has obtained licenses for 14 states. Elon Musk remains confident that he will obtain all the authorizations before the end of the year. For our part, we remain rather dubious.

X: on the road to artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is also one of the key areas for improvement. The platform has announced its intention to develop more AI-powered tools.

X explains:

"We'll continue to show you more relevant and important content by enhancing our innovative "See Similar Posts" feature, powered by xAI. The next enhancement 'See Different Posts' will allow users to explore content that matches their interests or challenges their views based on their past activity, improving the quality and balance of the information they receive."

In 2023 X, had already launched Grok, an AI-powered chatbot. On this tool, the social network promised that the chatbot would be endowed with a sense of humor and real-time data use. Problem: Elon Musk has a bone of contention with OpenAI, in which he invested before wanting to take the helm. Oops!

In short, it's pretty clear that all of Elon Musk's wishes for X won't be achievable in 1 year. It will take much longer for the platform to become the promised everything app.
