Instagram: maximize your engagement with long reels

Instagram wants to extend the maximum duration of reels. Focus on the reasons for this change.

A few months ago, Instagram tested a new option: extending the duration of reels from 90 seconds to 3 minutes. Looks like the test was a success, as the social network begins to expand its user base.

Instagram: the arrival of long reels?

Although the short format is one of the most engaging video formats, its main problem remains monetization. A reality first shared by TikTok, which has not hesitated to significantly increase the time limit on its videos. Unsurprisingly, and as is often the case, Instagram is following suit, slowly rolling out longer reels.

In one of his posts, Justin Jarvis shows how the option appeared on his profile. He is now invited to create 3-minute reels, as opposed to the current maximum of 90 seconds.

Longer reels: what's the point?

Beyond monetization, like TikTok, Instagram seeks to keep users' attention on the content it offers. Last January, Meta reported that Reel consumption was up 20% year-on-year. A somewhat paradoxical figure, given the group's desire to put the photo format back on the same scale as video. Whatever some content creators and Meta may think, it would appear that users in 2024 will be particularly fond of video.

Long reels: when do they come out?
