According to Mark Zuckerberg, Threads has reached 130 million users. According to Meta's CEO, this growth rate appears to be stable.

Mark Zuckerbeg unveiled the progress of Threads, his latest social network, during the announcement of the fourth-quarter results for 2023. He also added:

"Threads now has more people actively using it than when it was first launched, and I think it's well on the way to becoming a big success."

Threads: significant but logical growth

Assuming that Threads has only been available on European stores since last December, it's not particularly surprising that the social network has seen exponential growth in the first instance, and stable growth in the second. There's been quite a buzz around the "Twitter of Meta", as Internet users like to call it. Over the Christmas period, Threads recorded an increase of 26 million users in Europe alone. Add to this the growth beyond the EU's borders, and it's clear that the figures exceed all expectations.

Threads up, X down

While Meta's social network is slowly gaining ground, Elon Musk's is plummeting. Although X has announced that it will be profitable by the end of 2023, creators are gradually deserting the social network. According to the Reech study on the evolution of influence in 2024, only 5% of content creators continue to use the platform. According to Reech, "It's hard not to see an effect of Elon Musk's policy in this sudden decline, which has already driven many advertisers away", an opinion we largely share.

Threads: what's new in 2024?

Meta's new social network has announced the arrival of Trendings Topics, an option that has been completely ripped off from its X competitor. Trendings Topics have always been a big hit on the old Twitter. Through a list of keywords, X presents the hottest topics of the moment. This key element of the platform has largely contributed to making it the social network most prone to disseminating hot news. All in all, it's easy to see why Threads wants to make it its own.

We're still in the early months of the new year, but it's clear that the Musk-Zuckerberg war will continue to fuel social media news in 2024. It remains to be seen whether Threads will succeed in overtaking X.
